April Fools Day With Conflicker

Mar 31
2009

If you give credibility to the news on the Web, you’re expecting a nasty April Fools Day jolt tomorrow. The Conflicker worm is expected to do its dastardly deed to millions of PCs by blocking access to antivirus vendors’ and Microsoft’s Web sites. This means if you wake up to Conflicker tomorrow you’ll be unable to get automatic updates nor will you be able to download the Conflicker removal tools. At least one source suggests that you’ll have to use an uninfected computer to download the removal tool or have a friend email it to you. But the tricky part of this is that infected machines are expected to block removal tools with “Conflicker” in the name, so that you may have to rename the file before attempting to run it.

And you thought all we had to worry about in April was income tax deadline?

Java Problems?

My friend Mark S.writes:

I don’t know if you have updated Java lately but the most recent update (6.0.130) installs a running service (Java Quick Starter in your services aplet) that is a “prefetcher to help load java applets more quickly.” All I can see that it does is take a bite out of memory. I disabled and could see no difference.

Blog, blog, blog ….. everyone’s doing it so I might as well throw my hat in the ring, too. The next thing you know I may even use Twitter, although as someone asked on CBS’ Sunday Morning yesterday, “Do you have to be a Twit to Twitter?”

I’ll post a few musings here as they come across my aged mind, and what the hey, a little publicity of Neat Net Tricks never hurt, I suppose. Meanwhile, if you have absolutely no clue as to what a “Neat Net Tricks” is, I invite you to my Web site at http://www.neatnettricks.com or take the plunge at http://www.neatnettricks.com/subscribe . It’s free, so you can’t argue about the price.
